Rag Darbari is one of the most famous Hindi novels written by Sri Lal Sukla, an author known for his social and political satire. He was awarded the Sahitya Academy Award, the highest Indian literary award, in 1970 for this novel. The novel highlights the failing values present in post-Independence Indian society. It exposes the helplessness of intellectuals in the face of a strong and corrupt nexus between criminals, businessmen, police and politicians.

The novel is narrated from the point of view of Ranganath, a research student in history, who comes to live with his uncle, Vaidyaji, in a village named Shivpal Ganj for a few months. He learns how his uncle uses all the village institutions - the village school, the village panchayat (a local elected body), the local government offices, etc. for his political purpose. The conduct of his uncle and the petty village politicians is in stark contrast to the ideals that Ranganath has learnt to aspire to during his university education. Here are singers that include the whole gamut from KL Saigal to Asha Bhosle, lyricists that include Sahir and Gulzar, music composers from Naushad to RD Burman, artistes that were part-time singers and full time actors like Ashok Kumar, melody queens like Noor Jahan and Lata Mangeshkar, gentlemen lyricists like Prem Dhawan and gentlemen singers like Manna Dey, mischief-makers like Kishore Kumar and rebels without pause like OP Nayyar and Majrooh Sultanpuri.

In fact, this book is a house in which all these great talents live happily, each in a separate room, given space for self-expression. The serious research that has gone into this book is evident as you move from one chapter to another, opening layers after layers presented non-seriously.

Over 100 music makers are presented this way and many more in a huge single chapter. In the English-speaking cultures many of the most important texts are translations, from Homer to Beckett, the Bible to Freud. Although recent years have seen a boom in translation studies, there has been no comprehensive yet convenient guide to this essential element of literature in English.

Written by eminent scholars from many countries, the Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translation meets this need and will be essential reading for all students of English and comparative literature. It highlights the place of translation in our culture, encouraging awareness of the issues raised, making the translator more visible. Concentrating on major writers and works, it covers translations out of many languages, from Greek to Korean, from Swahili to Russian. For some works (e.g.

Virgil's Aeneid) which have been much translated, the discussion is historical and critical, showing how translation has evolved over the centuries and bringing out the differences between versions. Elsewhere, with less familiar literatures, the Guide examines the extent to which translation has done justice to the range of work available. The Guide is divided into two parts. Part I contains substantial essays on theoretical questions, a pioneering outline of the history of translation into English, and discussions of the problems raised by specific types of text (e.g. Poetry, oralliterature). The second, much longer, part consists of entries grouped by language of origin; some are devoted to individual texts (e.g. The Thousand and One Nights) or writers (e.g.

Ibsen, Proust), but the majority offer a critical overview of a genre (e.g. Chinese poetry, Spanish Golden Age drama) or of a national literature (e.g. Hungarian, Scottish Gaelic). There is a selective bibliography for each entry and an index of authors and translators. This book explores how ideas Gandhi expressed over a century ago can be applied today to issues from terrorism to the environment, globalization to the 'Clash of Civilizations.' In particular it looks at Gandhi's emphasis on the small, the local, and the human – an emphasis that today begins to appear practical, attractive, and even inescapable.

I've been trying to learn harmonium on my own for a while now, and I've tried a couple of videos online and picked up some ragas from here and there. But I just couldn't get a normal pattern or a course to follow and which I can commit to.The intent of learning is to be musically literate and be able to understand raags/ragas of Indian(Hindustani) classical music.

I don't know any other instruments; I don't know harmonium either, but I can at least catch dead simple rhythms on it by trying for an hour or so. I wonder if I can even do it without a proper master!By classic book, I mean something which has been an authority or epitome of good pedagogy in the field for quite some time.I don't wish to learn the western style, but if it can get me started I won't mind following it religiously. I do have a keyboard, but no harmonium, keyboard's got harmonium's tone so I practice on it!Thanks!

What the harmonium is great for is playing Bhajans or Kirtan. If your intent is to learn Indian classical music, a keyboard instrument is not ideal for a couple of reasons:.Tuning - Many ragas, while they can be approximated using the western 12-note scale, have notes that are not exactly in tune with a harmonium or piano. From wikipedia on Indian Classical music:Indian music uses just-intonation tuning, unlike most modern Western classical music, which uses the equal-temperament tuning system.Changing the pitch of a note - The ability to slide from one note to another, or to ornament a note by changing it's pitch slightly is an essential part of the Indian classical music language.

The term is Meend (similar to glissandi in Western classical music), and is not possible on keyboard instruments like the piano or harmonium (unless you use an electronic keyboard with a pitch bend).
