I notice there isn't really a 'guide' for getting into this series (that needs to become a trend for really long-running franchises). Never tried one for more than a few minutes, but I've noticed there are some Ghosts n' Goblins-inspired indies popping up these days. From what I can tell there are three 'main' games: The NES one, the Genesis/Mega Drive one, and the SNES one. Then there are some Gargoyle games or whatever. Which ones are worth playing today and what platforms are they on?I think I tried the SNES one once way back on Wii Virtual Console and sucked at it. I picked up a copy of Maximo at some point too and tried that for a few minutes. And I've got a copy of Demon's Crest sitting on my 3DS.

I'm usually extremely anti save-scumming, but for the older games I highly recommend that you can play them in a way that you can use save states to learn the game. I honestly don't think Super Ghouls n Ghosts is that hard, it's just extremely punishing because of how the life system works. The PSP game is very good and more forgiving, but if you have an actual PSP I high recommend importing that final Kai version from Japan.Really they're pretty much all worth playing.

I especially like Gargoyles Quest 2, Demon's Crest, and Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins Kai. The first two games are arcade games. They have NES and Genesis ports, but if you're going to play them today you should try to play a release based on the arcade versions like the Capcom Arcade Cabinet on 360/ONE/PS3 or the PSP Capcom arcade collection, if at all possible. They're definitely better than the NES and Genesis versions. That said, I think the best start would probably the SNES game using continues? That's probably a reasonably easy introduction without being a cakewalk.it's best to accept as soon as you can that you'll never actually beat (as in, 1cc) the arcade games. I'm usually extremely anti save-scumming, but for the older games I highly recommend that you can play them in a way that you can use save states to learn the game.

I guess fans of the older games might like it though, at least it has the original version too. I wonder if there is a split among GnG fans over Ultimate like there is with older Castlevania games and the Igavania's?It's too bad no one will be able to buy any of the games on the Wii E-shop with the entire thing shutting down in 39 days- and no one will be able to redownload purchase games sometime after either.

Ghost

Basically all four games are really good.-The first game is the hardest in the series and might be difficult to get into as your first (though it was the first one I played, and I really enjoyed it). Avoid the NES port at all costs, it sucks.-The second game is my favorite, I really think it's one of the best platformers of all time. The Japanese Genesis port is actually pretty close to being arcade-perfect, but the American one is toned down in terms of difficulty (though this might make it good as an entry point to the series). The most highly recommended game here.-The third game (for the SNES) is probably the weakest in the series. Much slower than the others, and also a lot longer, which isn't good given the whole two-loop structure of the games.-The fourth game (for PSP) is great, but I've only put extensive time into the second (Japan-only) version. The first version has a lot of exploration chaff that doesn't really work with Ghosts 'n Goblins mechanics and isn't as good as the rest of the series, but the updated version is really awesome and also highly recommended.
